French Naval Compass By Lerebours & Secretan
Large French naval compass housed in its original burl wood box. Two glass ports on the lid with another one on the base allowing the compass to be viewed or lighted. Measuring 7 3/4 " the compass rose is printed paper over mica, displaying the cardinal points and the printing Marine Imperiale.
The box and compass have French Naval anchor markings. The compass is engraved: Lerebours et Secretan a Paris. Missing compass lantern.
The dimensions are 12 3/4" x 12 3/4" x 11 1/4".
Marc Francois Louis Secretan(1804-1867) was a professor of astronomy at Lausanne. he worked with Noel Marie Paymal Lerebours in Paris from 1845 to 1855.
