Foghorn In Wooden Box By Balco--SOLD
A pumping handle on the side of the box operates this foghorn. It was used onboard a vessel to warn of its approach when arriving into port around the coastline of MA. during the heavy fog.
An authentic Balco boxed foghorn surviving in good working order. This particular model is #114 dated 1893 as engraved on the makers brass tag. Leather handle on top for transporting. Crank handle on box side and retaining it's original yellow painted wood box and black stenciled letters of the ship's name, the Schooner James Hoyt of Salem. Hinged so its inner workings are visible for repair. Early and rare American model. 18 1/2 x 9 x 12 3/4 inch.
