Rosewood handle. Original dove tailed mahogany keystone case with brass edging and engraved plate with Captain's name H.E.Bastrup. Length of brass index arm is 10 inches. Seven colored glass shades, horizon, glass and swing away magnifier. Pivoting peep sight and three optics. Thomas Parnell worked near the Hermitage bridge, Lower East Smithfield, London. The instrument dates around 1830; later in its travels it must have crossed the Atlantic to America and ended in the shop of Henry Duren who had a flourishing business in New York circa 1860. Scale reads to 140 degrees. Overall a handsome navigational instrument.
