Carved Black Oyster Shell--SOLD

A mother of pearl shell, a souvenir of Ste. Adressoese, relief carved with fishermen on the rocky shore holding his bait net. Very serene in mood. Antique  French tourist item. Since Tahiti was then occupied by the French, it's no surprise that this particular shell was widely available to French craftsmen: Tahitian black ocean pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera), the same animal (and material) from which come the famously exotic and costly black jewelry pearls!

6.5" x 6.75", nicely toned with rainbow iridescence, and since it's a juvenile shell the black backside "bark" is strikingly patterned with rows of white dots.
