Scarce desk top telescope by Joseph Casartelli, Manchester.
Handsome 19th century brass telescope, all complete, original, and in working order retaining 95% of its original lacquered surface. The original fitted mahogany storage box is 16 1/8" in length, 5 7/8" wide and 3 5/8" deep. The telescope includes an additional eyepiece . Telescope measures 12" closed, 44 1/4" fully extended. The objective lens is 2 3/8" in diameter. Included in the fitted case is the telescope's three legged cabriolet stand . The height of the base is 11". The barrel is tightly wrapped in baleen and is in near mint condition.
Signed on the initial draw: Casartelli, 43 Market Street, Manchester. He started work at this location in 1851 and produced many optical instruments until 1900.
