1711-12 Backstaff or Davis Quadrant by Moore--SOLD
One of the earliest dated Davis’ quadrants known. Only a handful of examples are known to exist with a date earlier than 1711. Clearly signed “Made by Jonathan Moore for Mr. Alexander Willson 1711/12″. Fruit wood frame with scribed lines and stamped throughout with rosettes and fleur de lys. The larger arc is graduated along lower edge from 0-25 degrees. The smaller arc is graduated from 0-65 degrees. Beautiful quality craftsmanship. There are no vanes. An incredible early navigating instrument. Overall length of the instrument is 26 inches. The condition is superb.
