Large Dry Card Compass by Bliss & Creighton


This is a wonderful large dry card, brass bowl, gimbaled compass with a sophisticated gimbaled pivoting mechanism.  It was manufactured before 1853 by Bliss & Creighton who were in business in New York from 1835 to 1853, making and marketing chronometers and other items for navigational use. The sliding wood cover is missing. The compass is extraordinary and may be unique for its size. Diameter of the bowl is 12 inches, the card is 11 inches, and the box measures 15 in. x 15 in. x 10 in. It is in very good condition with some gesso loss to the glazing.
